The
‘80s
‘80s
Rules are broken and levels of competitiveness are raised in all sectors. Technological research and innovation capacity are the system’s vital challenges. Trade unions and parties lose strength and credibility, the economy prevails over politics. Fashion, luxury, beauty, image, career and success become myths and collective aspirations. These are the years of the “Reagan hedonism” and of “Milano da bere” (“Milan to drink”)
In change, Vietri captures the lack of collective and individual interest in the values of freedom and justice, equity and solidarity. He shows a city increasingly alienated and estranged from man, overwhelmed by technique, by the car and traffic as well as box-like buildings that leave no living space for man and nature. Compared to the 1960s, the forms become more schematic, the colors more anti-naturalistic, almost trying to reproduce the functionalist geometry and prevailing technicalism.
Fiat happening exhibition
The automobile, the flywheel of the development model, emblematic product of industrialisation, becomes for Vietri a symbol of technique and of technical rationalization of production processes, of relations between men and between men and nature. Vietri dedicated the exhibition “Happening” – that he organized in 1983 in the exhibition hall of the Fiat branch in Bologna – to the automobile, a provocation to make counter-information and call for critical reflection.

The gaze is on the city, where everything is movement, traffic of cars, motorbikes, buses, trucks; the man is overwhelmed by it, just as he is overwhelmed by the large buildings of the new suburbs, where he seems to get lost without perspective. Abandoned countryside and bare trees imprisoned between houses like human beings, sometimes similar to the point of not standing out, characterize the pieces of these years. The city produces loneliness, while the wounded nature seems to threaten the city. Always towering are the big brands of cars, oil, energy.
