The Late
Vietri
Vietri
Ten years after his death, the full force and relevance of his corrosive critique of power
The Atelier, on the tenth anniversary of Vietri’s death, is exhibiting a broad selection of paintings from his final period, 2005-2008. For nearly two decades, Vietri forcefully denounced the defeat of a civilization that renounced rationality, surrendering to force of arms and dispersing the profound meaning of democracy. He rebelled and called for rebellion through his work: precise, analytical, and incessant. However, he now senses a new threat: the concentration of a new globalized political-economic-technocratic power. “Oligarchies Against” is the symbolic work of this exhibition, which speaks of loss: the loss of values, freedom, identity and awareness of contemporary man, of project hope for the future. Extreme alarm over the looming crisis, but also a reaffirmation of the centrality of man, a vindication of his rights and cultural, moral and spiritual values, of respect for nature and peace as the foundation of civilization.
A significant period in Vietri’s artistic production which, between 2010 and 2012, also saw his works interpreted by leading Italian poets (here in Events, Encounters with Poetry).
